Bought and played on Steam. The writing is very good! The main menu presents a bookcase where there are a selection of books - one starting book that is an introductory thing, and six character books. Each character book is a particular route and can be thought of as being a perspective of the overarching story. As you play through each route, the player gets a clearer picture of what's happening (and what has happened), even if the main character's knowledge is limited to whatever route they're in.

The story is compelling and the voice-acting, though minimal, really adds to it. The actors are very good at their roles. I can't wait to find out what comes next.

The interface is still a bit confusing, but much, much better than previous iterations. Like night and day. You can save whenever you want, but you only have one save file. As such, there is no save/load screen in the traditional sense. When you start/double click on a character book to open it, there is a screen (page) with a 'load' button and a 'chapter selection' button.

  • The load button will take you to the start page of the most recent chapter you've played (not the most recent chapter you've unlocked)
  • The chapter selection button will take you to a page where you can select any chapter you have previously unlocked through playing.

Once you've selected or loaded the chapter, there is the 'replay mode' toggle. This is how the game handles having no multiple saves/loads. You can play through the first time with the replay mode on or off. If the toggle is off, your answers/pathway will be captured and used for the next chapter. Turn replay mode on, and and your answers won't be captured and won't used for the next chapter.

There are symbols when choosing certain options that pop up in the upper left corner.

  • Wings with heart: romance
  • Wings with hands: friendship
  • Wings with crown: unknown, possible approval points

I do know that the 'crown' symbol is converted to either romance or friendship points upon player choice in late game as a 'tie breaker'. This isn't in game yet. This was posted on tumblr I believe.

Possible bug: if you're replaying and you have skip seen dialogue on, the choices in the choice menu flip between one another upon menu load. Weird.

I like that they have included Irish words and phrases but I do find it a bit disengaging. I kind of wish you could just get the translation by hovering over the underlined word, and then click for more information/pronunciation.

I wrote too much. The game is great. Try it out! $20 CAD.

I just reserved it, I am currently travelling but once I am home I will buy it on steam to use my own currence

I'm truly, hopelessly in love with Na Daoine Maithe and have been for some time now, but with this first major update, I really cannot emphasize enough how absolutely phenomenal of a game it already is in every single aspect.

To start, the writing is extremely compelling, with so much care and detail put into its intricate worldbuilding, vast amount of choices and scene variations that carry over decisions made in previous volumes, and remarkably well-paced storytelling with a true wealth of content (I mean look at the word count we're being treated to!!) that is incredible on so many levels.

Then there's the fact that NDM's characters have me in a permanent chokehold. Sooo many scenes with them live rent-free in my mind, and I can't remember the last time I was so utterly captivated by a cast. Both in their endlessly entertaining dynamics with each other, as well as how individually they all hold such uniquely powerful appeals and intrigue that's just had me dying to get to know everyone better ever since the demo first released.

And now that this update's out, allowing us to finally experience what it's like to really connect with Shae and Maeve on a deeper level? Yeah it MORE than delivered, those two certainly own my heart now and forever, and there's no doubt that with quality routes like this, in the future the other four will be sure to follow <3

I could ramble on forever given enough time, but other highlights that instantly come to mind: love love love the game's MC (who leaves plenty of room for players to roleplay but is still enough of a character to allow for consistent/interesting/imo relatable narration), the voice acting's to die for, I frequently tear up at how amazing the aro/ace spectrum representation is (Shae, Keagan, Robin, Daonna, optionally MC, all of whom are treated with such love and respect for these aspects of themselves...as an arospec ace myself I'll truly never be over it in the best way), and then of course there's the divinely gorgeous art present in all of the glorious backgrounds, CGs, and sprites.

It's no exaggeration to say that I recommend this game with all of my heart and every fiber of my being. It also helps that at this point in time, the price is a complete steal considering what's to come, so do yourself a favor and go for it now! Experience the magic of what makes this game so incredibly special, you won't regret it <3

(+13)(-2)

Please consider an option to toggle no avatar to be used or if that's too difficult a blank one with just a background color added to the other three with no sprite. I think it sucks more since they say you look just like Daonna in game and the current options are a bit too androgynous/young looking for me personally which ruins immersion. I really love how inclusive this game is but the sprites for Daonna made me not really enjoy the updated demo once I played it unfortunately. I hope a compromise like myself and others suggested could be made.

https://moiraimyths.itch.io/tgp/devlog/821513/november-1-2024-shae-maeves-routes...

As of our most recent announcement concerning the Nov. 1 release date of Shae and Maeve's routes (part 1), we will be including a 4th MC/Daonna choice. This will give players the option of playing with a "blank" Daonna, or personally customizing the portions of the sprite where Daonna's physical features are visible via the game files.

(+2)

This is a great idea! I for one would love to create my own custom sprite, just the way I imagine my MC.

Wanted to try the demo, but I got stuck at the character creation screen with which I have a couple issues.

1. I found the whole name/nickname part confusing. I would've liked a bit more explanation as to what the two different names are. Like I get nickname is what we'll be referred to, but what does that make the name, our full name? True name?

Like if my character goes by their full name, should I put that as the name and just leave nickname blank? Should I put that as nickname and put something else for the name. I would've assumed the former, but the fact you can leave it to be a mystery made me think it's not just your character's given name. (This is why I got stuck there, as I wasn't sure what to put in.)

2. I didn't find the buttons to change the MC avatar very intuitive. They didn't really stick out as buttons and just kind of blended into the rest of the mirror.

3. In the event that none of the sprites match your MC, it would be nice to have an option to just like disable the sprite for the MC/Doanna or like have a 4th generic sprite that's like cloaked or obscured by shadows so you can't make out features.

Also speaking of the MC/Doanna sprites. Out of curiosity are those three 100% going to be the only ones available, or is there the possibility of more in the future assuming time/budget allows?

(+3)(-2)

Hello, thank you for your questions!

1. True names, in many fairy stories, refers to a person's full / real name. It is generally advised to avoid 'giving away' your true name to the fairies, hence players are prompted to either accept a default true name or make their own, along with a nickname, which is what the MC will be (eventually) referred to by the cast, etc. Ergo, if your true name is Samantha, your nickname could be Sam (or something entirely different from the true name - obscuring one's true name as much as possible is often advised 😉).

2. Would making the arrows different colours help with this?

3. We'll make a note of this, but can make no guarantees. In the original demo we only had one sprite option, and our Kickstarter fell short of the full customization goal, so financially additional sprites are off the table at this point. Regardless, these sprites only functionally appear when Daonna appears, so players are free to imagine any number of differences between their MCs and Daonna, such as variations in hair length, style, etc.

(1 edit) (+3)(-1)

1. Okay so if I want my character to be referred to by their full name I should put that as both? (whether or not that's advisable)

2. That might help, I'm not really a graphic designer or anything so I don't really know what exactly would help it pop. I just know it felt like, that they blended into the mirror a bit too much, to the point where if I'd not known you could change it going in, I might have completely missed they were clickable.

3. There's another game on itch, Infinite Stars, that has Patreon tier where one of the rewards is getting to commission a player avatar for the game. Have you considered something like that as a way to add more character appearance options?

(-1)
  1. Yes - if you want your MC to be referred to by their full name in the routes, you would input it as a nickname. It is worth noting that for Vol. 1, your MC will be mistaken for Daonna/called Daonna.
  2. We will make a note of that.
  3. This is unlikely. We know from our Kickstarter that custom MCs take a considerable amount of time to create, so we realistically wouldn't be able to balance custom MCs along with game updates, which are our priority.
(2 edits) (+6)

Thanks for the answers. And thats fair with the custom MCs. Sorry if it seems like I'm getting hung up on that. It's just like that while, having given the demo a go at this point I do really like it, the whole concept of everyone confusing the MC for Doanna does kind of break down for me a bit when you have to give them an image that very much doesn't match the image of the MC in my head. Which is why I initially suggested an option for no avatar or a featureless one. Anyway that's my thoughts on the matter, thanks for taking the time to respond.

(+4)(-2)

It would be nice if it were available for Android as well.

(+1)(-1)

Sameeee. None of the good games are ever available for my poor phone 😭😭😭

nah, gotta pulled out my laptop for this

yeah that would be great if mine didn't go kaboom lol

(+3)

bookmarked this game a while ago, and checked back in on this to see the demo had been updated so I finally gave it a try and wow!! I love the wide range of the LIs in terms of personality, and I loved stopping to click on new words/terms to read about them as new ones came up. admittedly my head began to swim as I neared the end of the demo with all the new info I was processing but lmao I still loved it !! very excited to hear two routes will be released really soon.

quick question, and totally understandable if it's not answerable at the moment, but how much will the game in its entirety cost? will you have to pay to access Shae and Maeve's routes, and so on and so forth with the release of the next two routes and the two after that? basically just wondering how that'll work! again lovely game, amazing worldbuilding, and genuinely engaging love interests. <3

(+3)

Thank you! :D What we can tell you right now is that you'll only need to pay for the *main game once: If you pay for NDM on Steam, all future updates will be automatic, and if you pay on Itch, you'll be notified about new patches/downloads as they become available. That said! Given the game won't be finished for a while, we want to make sure the price reflects the amount of content available, ergo the overall price will be lower the earlier you choose to buy the game.

*We will be releasing optional side stories/DLCs between main game updates, which will need to be bought separately. These side stories will not be necessary for understanding the broader game though, and simply act as extra content.

late on the response sorry!! but that answers my question perfectly! can't wait for the main game to begin releasing.

(+2)

Just finished the demo and really loved it. Great job guys! I will definitely add the game to my collection and keep an eye out for the first two routes you'll release. May I ask, if it isn't meant to be a surprise, who's route will be out first? Thank you!

(+1)

Not a secret at all: Shae and Maeve (part 1 - ~100k words total) will be out first this fall! ;D Thanks for playing!

Hello! Every time I go to open the demo it tells me the operation failed due to potential viruses. At first I thought this might have been a me issue but all my other game applications open fine.

That's very odd! The only suggestions we can make is to either whitelist us in your virus scanner or download the game on Steam instead: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2070170/The_Good_People_Na_Daoine_Maithe/

Another option is downloading the itch app launcher (https://itch.io/app) and downloading our game that way!

Hi ! Steam gave me a similar message about the operation failing due to a virus so :? unfortunate bust. I tried itch.io and received this

Hmm, strange. That said: We will need to see a glimpse at that "details for nerds" bit in your screenshot to potentially troubleshoot the issue, and we need to know your OS as well.

hey sorry it took me a while! I'm operating under a 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor (I had to look up how to find this out ._.) still am not sure whats going on

I'm so excited for the update, I can't wait to play! Unfortunately, on the character creation, I accidentally clicked 'Feed My Pronouns to Robin' and I am unable to get them back across all platforms of the game (Steam and Itch.io)? It says 'it is no longer mine to use' and in order to reclaim it in need H$ 3 and I only have H$ 0. Does anyone know how I can fix this??

(+3)

Ah, you fell for the classic blunder! Accidentally feeding Robin your pronouns... Happens all the time!

Fortunately, there is a quick fix that doesn't involve farming for horse coins early game.  After saving your profile (which only needs a nickname to continue), exit the character creator to the main menu (the bookshelf). From there, click the gear icon at the top right (which goes to the settings/preferences menu) and scroll to the bottom. Select "Reset Profile" and Robin will return your pronouns, albeit slightly damp.

(+1)

I really like the game; the concept, the artwork, the story! I'm looking forward to seeing more it.

The menu screen is a bit confusing. When first getting past the splash screen, I was thrown into the character creator, but it wasn't immediately clear what to do when I was finished there. At first I didn't realize how to even get out of that screen. Then I didn't know what to click on once I was in the bookcase selection screen. I think that it would be beneficial to make the volume numbers on the spines bigger, or have it otherwise more obvious which book to click on to start. The rest of the interface could use more focus-states, in my opinion.

Thank you for keeping in the rollback option enabled. It's an accessibility issue for some and just a nice quality-of-life thing for others. In that vein, I don't quite understand why the option to remove at-will saving and loading was made. It's probably the most annoying thing for me, personally.

Just some thoughts. It's a beautiful game!

Thank you for your feedback! Regarding the menu screens, would implementing tutorial pop-ups assist with navigation for first-time players? e.g. A pop-up after the splash screen saying something to the effect of, "Name the Éireannach (Irishman) and select preferred pronouns to continue" and another in the bookshelf menu highlighting Vol. 1 as the starting point of the game, etc?

Regarding at-will saving: We generally felt our chapters were of a short enough length that automatic saving after a chapter ends would be sufficient, but we will make a note of this feedback from an accessibility perspective. Implementing at-will saving is not something we could do immediately, though, as it would involve creating another menu and incorporating it into our current interface in a sensible way.

I think tutorial pop-ups for the main menu bookshelf would be great! For the character creator, I did all those - named the Éireannach, chose my pronouns, and clicked save. I remained on that screen. I tried a bunch of keys/clicks (I think right click worked) to get to the main menu. Maybe a 'Continue' or 'Finished' button near the 'Save' button on that screen would work?

Thank you for considering at-will saving! <3

(+1)

Ah! The exit button for the character creator menu is the "x" in the inkwell's bottle cap at the top left, actually.

D: I completely missed it!

This looks so good but for some reason isn't opening on my mac... downloaded and unzipped the file, and given permission in settings for it to be opened but every time I click on it it just automatically closes :(

We're sorry to hear you're having issues with the mac version! We're looking into the problem and will let you know when we have a solution. Would you be comfortable sharing what your mac OS is?

Also: Have you tried downloading the app / launching it through Steam? In our trials we were able to launch the game through Steam on a Sonoma 14.5 OS. If Steam is an option for you, our page is here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2070170/The_Good_People_Na_Daoine_Maithe/

Hi, thank you!! My mac OS is Big Sur 11.1. In the meantime, I'll definitely download on Steam so I can play :)

Great, glad to hear Steam worked! Since our last post, we also managed to come up with a few more solutions, so in case someone else is reading this and looking for help we're going to link it here: https://moiraimyths.itch.io/tgp/devlog/775679/troubleshooting-for-mac-users-unab...

(+3)

Let me be the first to say - Happy new demo launch! And also the first to say thank you so much for adding in the "Secrets" to the preferences, I appreciate not having to look far for quality tips and hints

(+2)

Now that I've had a chance to play through, I must say, everything looks gorgeous! The updated backgrounds and sprites are beautiful, and when you mentioned new sprites for NPCS, I wasn't expecting so many! Massive kudos to your artists for all of their hard work. And also to the voice team, all of whom have done a fantastic job. All in all this is a much more polished, cohesive version of a demo I already loved, and gives me a lot of enthusiasm for the eventual finished product! Thanks to the whole team for sharing!

(+1)

💖💖💖 Thank you! The entire team is thrilled that folks seem to be enjoying the update :D

(+2)

the first update is almost upon us, very exciting!

(+1)(-1)

I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH :'D all the characters are so amazingly made and ugh...I love the king so much TT__TT (Robin should rename themselves to Loki xD)

(+3)

Quite enjoyed the demo! Looking forward to the full game.

(+3)(-1)

This may sound like a dumbass question, but I can't find it anywhere in the game. Is there a way to save/load without restarting a chapter?

(+1)

There doesn't seem to be another way, it's not even mentioned in the game controls :'(

(+2)(-1)

So excited for the full release, this games is so intriguing and beautiful and exciting! Not only that but is so well written????! It is also very fun to "Learn" their language. All love and support for the developers S2

i mean whats the password?

(+1)(-1)

You acquire the password by making a specific choice in the demo! Hint: That choice happens toward the end of chapter four, and impacts chapter five. You'll need to go hunting in your game files and decode some things afterwords, though!

If you need more help, you could always ask the folks on our Discord: https://discord.gg/rcQbKT3kVV

(+3)

uhhh guys? how do i get the password? im soooo confused

(+23)(-1)

It's FILLEADH AS AN NUA , in case you and everyone else is wondering. Kind of find it very annoying when games make things so hard to figure out, so here's the answer for everyone else who hates these kinda things.

(+5)

THANK YOU SO SO SO SO MUCH YOUR A LIFE SAVER!!!!!!!

(+4)

I am so excited about the release of the first routes. Everything about the demo is mesmerising: the soundtrack, the character design, the art and the storytelling. I am particularly interested in the political, anti-colonialist/anti-imperialist aspects and the folklore but am also already intrigued by the stories of all the love interests. Also, as a non-binary person myself, I am pleased to bits to see that both the main character and some of the love interests are non-binary. Thank you for making this game. I can hardly wait for the moment I get to learn more about Shae, Robin, Aífe, Flannán, Keagan and Maeve and discover the ways in which the Seelie and Unseelie propaganda will affect my emotions and ideas about the two courts. I also cannot help but be fascinated by Daonna's past. Who are they? Where did they come from? What did they want? Where did they go and why? Are they gone for good or do they plan to return? (I know you can't answer these questions, nor do I expect you to, I just mean that this is what I would particularly like to find out when I play the game).

(+2)(-21)

So, I'm a girl and I changed the pronoun "they/them" to "she/her" in settings, but still all characters continue to say "they/them" when talking about me so I stop reading it. It's very disrespectful, you know. I don't want others to call me "they" when I'm a female. Please fix this bug in the game, then I'll go on reading. Thanks

(+11)(-2)

Hello! We included this information in the description of our demo, but the pronoun discrepancy is story-related at the moment. Right now, the characters all believe that the MC/protagonist is a different, but identical-looking person named Daonna. Daonna uses they/them pronouns. When the full game comes out, and the MC/protagonist is granted the opportunity to clarify the mix-up, characters will use your chosen pronouns. We apologize for any distress this may have caused.

(+6)

Can I just say that Flannán is literal fire!! When will the full game be released? I cannot wait to play his route firstly, and then all the others. The story is great! I love that it captures your interest from the get go! I love that the MC gets thrown into a whole different world and has to figure things out. The art is beautiful as well. Robin is annoying, but I think all the other characters are interesting and well written. I'm looking forward to playing it!

(+5)

Hi! Apologies for the delayed response, and thanks for playing the demo! The full game is currently in development, but the first two routes should be ready to play in 2024. We plan to progressively release the routes two at a time until the game's completion :)

(+1)

It took five years, but I finally worked out the password. I kept messing up translating, but I finally did it. I am satiated for now. Love the game.

(+2)

Had a TON of fun with the demo of NDM and am very excited to see the full game in its entirety! I love the Irish mythology inspiration and the character designs! It's such a pretty game. <3

Hi! I love this game so far! I was trying to follow everyone's advice on finding the password but I've received an exception error? I'm on Mac so there is no folder for me to check, can someone help me please? ;-;

(2 edits)

Hi, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that you encountered. May we ask for the exact computer model and OS system version on which you are trying to run the game?

(1 edit) (+1)

No worries! I've taken a screenshot of the details. :) Idk why it's so big sorry haha

(1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for info! For MacOS, you should be able to access the game folder by right-clicking NaDaoineMaithe.app > Show package content > Contents > Resources > autorun > game. The hint you are looking for will appear in one of the subfolders after you make a certain choice in a certain chapter.  We have a bit of difficulty reproducing the errors you are encountering, though by the look of it, the game might be missing some app permissions it needs for creating new files within the game folder. If you by chance have removed these permissions, restoring them back to default should be able to help. Alternatively, you can also try to move or reinstall the game from our itch.io or Steam into a less restrictive location; your game progress should be safe as long as you secure/backup your saves in ~/Library/RenPy/{game_directory} (which might be hidden and can only be accessed via terminal).

(1 edit)

Okay, I'll play around with it and see what happens. Thank you for your help!!

I'm not sure what I did but it works now! XD

(+1)

We are glad to hear that!!

(+1)

The visual novel is an absolute masterpiece in every way.

(+1)(-2)

I was very excited to see a game based on Irish mythology and history, and the demo only made me more excited! It has an intriguing story hook and prologue, and I love the character designs (which includes canon non-binary characters, something that means a lot to me). I'm very much looking forward to reading more when it releases.

(+1)

hate to be that girl, because right now, i feel stupid, but where do i look for the password? lmao. also, aífe. i love her. okay, that's all.

The password is in the game files after getting the letter.

If you need help getting the letter, in the chapter where you meet Aífe, make a different choice.

(+1)

haaa, thank you, but i must be stupid. i have no idea what i'm looking for.

(+1)

The letter is a picture in the game files that appears when you unlock it. The message that is circled is the password that you need to translate from Ogham (you just have to translate the letters). It is read from bottom to top. Here is the alphabet you can use to translate it: https://omniglot.com/writing/ogham.htm

(1 edit) (+1)

It sounds way too high tech for me. I keep seeing comments about passwords but I don't even get what it has to do with a visual novel.
Edit: Nvm found the files and it let me type after I opened the game another time, but I can't get the password right even with the code, not sure how I'm messing it up so badly :'( Oh well.

(+3)(-1)

I'M IRISH !!! HOLY SHT IT'S SO COOL TO SEE SMTH LIKE THIS !!! so so hyped for the game to come out omg omg omg

(+1)(-1)

I'm so excited for this game to fully come out! It took me like 30 minutes to figure out the password and this is already so interesting :)

(+1)

Just gave it a play! I'm super excited to see what's to come! Well done!! <3

(+3)

i loved the demo so much omg also the song that plays when the queen first sees the MC, it’s so beautiful :o what’s the name of the track???

(+3)

Thank you! I believe this is the song you're thinking of:

I love it! Only, I'm curious as to what tools you have to use to decode the letter...

(+1)

Thank you! There's no in-game tool to decode the letter, but the alphabet is Ogham (primitive Irish). If you search for it online, you should be able to find several sources to help translate the Ogham script!

how do you view the letter? I picked it up for the door but can not find any way to use it now that I am at the door

Ah, perhaps a closer look at the game files might help? ;)

(+4)

Jesus Christ, I felt that ending deep in my heart. You've really done our Irish tales, both real and fantastical justice. I'm really looking forward to this getting funded, definitely sharing this with anyone I know who likes visual novels!

(+2)

Thank you! <3 It means a lot to us to hear that we've done right by the stories.

obsessed with this game, but maybe u knew that already. <3

(+7)

LIFE CHANGING. this is already my next obsession.  love love love it. also love flannan. this game cleared my skin, cured my depression, and paid my mortgage. can't wait for the full version :D

(+6)(-1)

(Posting this here)
This demo was super rich and beautiful! I loved the lore, character designs, backgrounds, writing, and music :) the characters are super charming as well. Can't wait for the full game!
I would risk it all for Flan,,,

(+2)

I could not figure out the password for the life of me so I just quit until they can find a way to make the password accessible

If you want to work it out, you need to read the note given to you when you make a particular choice :)

(1 edit) (+5)

that's the problem you have no idea which choice it is to read the darn note... I'm over it but I hope the game does well this just isn't a game for people who don't like having to search around the internet for clues that's a bit much...

(+2)

can we at least get a hint on which chapter this note is given?

It's near the beginning, if you're nosy when in the outpost you should get it. But I agree with Honeyypott, this isn't super accessible.
I used the link posted above by the dev to decode and I still couldn't do it as I had to bounce between 4 different pages (letter, password, decoding site, and somewhere to type it initially). I had 2 different potential options as some letters has 2 different options (like y or h), and I still couldn't get it.
It began hurting my eyes and triggering migraine (I get chronic migraines so this is a risk any time I do anything, especially which involves going from light to dark screens regularly), so for me this genuinely isn't disabled accessible at this moment.
Maybe in the future there'll be another way to manage this.
I love puzzles but ones that require lots of faffing about between different pages where some are bright and some are dark is very difficult.

Just finished playing the demo and am so excited for the completed game! Will definitely be getting this once it fully comes out and am so excited! Thank you for the great game!
